Dare to dream

………. because if you can dream it, you can do it!

To dream is to believe. Visualizing a goal is the first step toward having the conviction necessary to achieve it. Dreams of success act as a catalyst for action, transforming aspirations into reality through unwavering determination, focus and positivity.

Mind you, I’m not talking about nightmares, or those random 3 am anxiety-inducing thoughts. This is about visualizing personal goals for success.

That said, if your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough. By the same token, doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.

I remember my dad telling us as kids, “dream big, work hard, stay focused. When dreams are hatched, they become successes.” He had a point. I’ve spent a lot of my life dreaming up various versions of me, all of which have materialized. Except the one where I was a famous ballet dancer. That one didn’t work out so well, ahem, at all.

For many people, opportunities pass them by because they didn’t grab them when they could have. A go-getter is usually aware of opportunities around them, immediately sensing when there is one. They make the most of every opportunity and think several steps ahead to proactively create opportunities for themselves. This requires a good dose of self-awareness, confidence and determination. It demands a vision, considerable foresight, some hindsight through lessons learned from past experience, and an understanding of the opportunity itself.

I’m inspired by mother, who, even while well into her 80s, travelled far and wide. She’d always dreamt of travelling to distant, exotic destinations. Amazingly, she recently made a monumental trip to southeast Asia, a 24-hour journey. Through sheer determination, she turned her dreams into opportunities and made them reality, despite many limitations.

However, opportunity often comes with associated risk. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Should you shy away from the opportunity? Or do you grab the proverbial bull by the horns and ……. just try it out? You may not know your next step, nor what the end state is, but that shouldn’t matter, because you’ll already be a step ahead of everyone else, and now you have to figure it out as you go along. The most important thing is to take the first step, which may seem like a giant leap! Once you’ve done that, you’ll find that you’re motivated to make it a success and see it through with a sense of optimism.

Be bold enough to start something and be really bad at it. But be smart enough to learn from mistakes.

It is difficult to say what is impossible, for the dream of yesterday is the hope of today and the reality of tomorrow. Robert Goddard
